TomTom sat nav faulty

Hi,
I bought a TomTom Via 120 sat nav from Halfords in August 2011. In Feb this year it went wrong. It just comes up with 'no maps found'.
I went on the TomTom site forums and seems to be a known problem. they give details how to fix this - which doesn't work in my case. After many attempts and emails to them with virtually the same response to keep trying the same thing on different computers! I asked for it to be repaired or replaced or a refund.
My question is - what are my rights? Do I take it back to Halfords or stick with TomTom? It's been 3 weeks since it went wrong and they're very slow with their responses so I just want it sorted now.
Any suggestions welcome (within reason of course! lol)
Thanks.

Your statutory rights are with Halfords. Read up on the Sale of Goods Act.
You can also try getting TomTom to replace under warranty, but last time I dealt with them their Customer Service was useless.0 -
Yes SOGA is Halfords but I've found the TomTom CS works very well. My current XL Live was over a year old and went faulty (couldn't write updates to internal memory) and they swapped it out for a new one very quickly.0

Have you upgraded your maps recently? Use this "TTuser Easytools" to solve your problem.0

Thanks to all those who replied.
I got my sat nav working again after 4 weeks trying!
I did a full reset which had tried before but it did nothing, this time it worked although lost everything on there = maps, voices etc; Have d/loaded the map again and the only 2 free voices available. So at least it's working but am waiting for a reply from tomtom regarding all the rest which is now missing also asked for compensation for the 4 weeks of not working let alone the many hours of trying to fix it! Not holding my breath on that one!0 -
Did you not backup in TomTom Home, they always advice you to create a backup of everything before and after downloading any new maps or application changes so you can restore if anything goes wrong.0

Why were you dealing with TomTom?
Your rights are with Halfords.
Compensation? What for? You didn't deal with the retailer, so nobody owes you compensation.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

No I didn't as the Via series has to use 'My Tomtom' not 'Home' & you can't back up - yet!
Also it didn't go wrong after or while updating the device - I just turned it on, it had been working ok the previous day.
Thanks for your reply though.0 -
TomTom have (supposedly) been working on a backup option in 'My TomTom' for months now-and still nothing.
IMHO releasing this software to market without this option being available makes the hardware product requiring it unfit for purpose. And it's not as though you have the option to use TomTom Home instead...No free lunch, and no free laptop0
