If you took the waste trap off, as I have suggested, you could than easily clean out the basin waste fitting that you say is blocked. You could do this from below, using a bottle brush or something similar. It ain't rocket science.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Good old fashioned plunger, but decent quality. Avoid £1 shop ones. Hot soapy water(fairy) filled to overflow. Block overflow and plunge really well. You should see some real gunk coming back. Be sure to make sure the overflow is sealed whilst doing this. Repeat a couple of times and you should see results.
I am not going to advise chemical as these are excellent but dangerous if not used right. Good Luck

Thanks for the tip, good old mse to my rescue again.

Had a blocked bathroom sink for last couple of days, tried bleach, soda crystals, a plunger and nothing, got loads of gunge up but water still wouldn't go down properly.

Didn't know you need to block the overflow though and after a few minutes we have a free running drain.:):T:T:T:)

    Thanks again

  • Just to say Thanks to all of you have posted info here.

I was looking for some nice natural (& inexpensive!) way to keep our house's sink & basins free-running i.e. prevent blockages . . . & I found it here! :T

Later, I remembered that the last time I had the same thought (a few years ago - how time flies! ;)) I, by chance!, at that same time happened to see 2 relevant books in a bookshop (BTW: nice & cheap bookshop chain that sells loads of remaindered/discontinued books: Booksale).

So I purchased these 2 books, meaning to read them. Never found the time of course! :D

Then I remembered them last week, after reading the forum threads here at MSE. So dug them out of my bookshelf & finally! got around to reading them.

They are very good, hence I recommend them to the MSE forum:

    They are titled:

    1. 'Green Clean [Eco Friendly Cleaning for the Home]' (2007) (publ: PRBooks) (ISBN: 1843978938) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Clean/dp/1843978938/

    2. 'Vinegar: 1001 Practical Household Uses' (2007) (publ: PRBooks) (ISBN: 1843978067) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vinegar-1001-Practical-Household-Uses/dp/1843978067

They are both spiro-bound so the pages are easy to turn/fold back. Plus they are a good size to hold.

Amazon are currently selling just 1 of these 2 books, but in any case there is a better offer as Amazon's resellers have them listed at only 1p + the usual postage cost at Amazon (c. £2.75).

I think the author might be American - from the myriad rerences to "cup" measurements! ;) - but both books are still very readable & the advice is practicable to UK readers.

(Just in case these 2 books help anyone else!)

    Thanks all

Thanks, but like I said the build up is on the actual plug hole itself rather than in the waste, and yes, it is designed different to usual plugholes I find. My boss has just fitted a similar oval basin and said he has the same problem :/

bathroom cleaner & a bit of elbow grease before it builds up to much
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

This might seem like an utterly stupid idea but I have often pulled out a large mass of hair by putting tweezers down as far as they can go and trying to grab hold of the gunk.
