Transfer of EDF account/tariff - moving home etc

Hi,

Sorry if some of these Q's seem silly we have just been thinking about possibilities. My brother and mum currently live together in mum's house but mum is moving to live with my Grandad as he needs a bit of caring for - her house will then go onto the market, my brother is in the process of purchasing his own house so should be moving out in a couple of months.

Mum is currently with EDF on the fixed 2014 tariff.

Can the account/tariff/direct debit be transferred into my brothers name whilst he continues to live at the property?

If this can be done - when he moves into his own house can he switch to EDF and transfer onto the fixed 2014 tariff or will he need to set up on a tariff available at the time? (I realise he will be with the existing supplier of the new house for the first 6-8weeks but he can initiate the switch as soon as he moves in).

If the above isn't possible - when mum's house sells will the termination fees for the fixed 2014 tariff apply as she obviously won't need her own gas/elec accounts anymore living with my Grandad (not sure if the fees apply just relating to switching supplier?).

Thanks

Hmmm - It's just a little bit complicated

The main thing is that your Mum will not be charged Early Terminatation fee's if she moves home, she just gives notice of her moving date, the meter readings and her new address to which EDF should send the Final Bill.

If at the same time your brother advises EDF that he will be the new householder he will become the account holder and bill payer, but as a 'new' account EDF will put him on their expensive 'Standard' tariff - So it all becomes a matter of timing
Option 1 Brother stays in house and pays EDF bills addressed to Mum, but keep in mind that Mum will still be responsible for the bills after he has moved out until the house is sold
Option 2 Brother takes over account and Switches to a cheaper tariff as soon as the EDF account is registered to him, and as the weather improves so will the bills, but he will then be responsible for the bills till the house is sold.
Provided amicable arrangements can be made between Mum & Son, this is probably the best Option as there are a lot of tariffs that are cheaper than EDF's 2014 Fix
    but
Do not sign up for any 'Deferred Discount' tariffs such as those offered by First Utility & n'power

Thanks for taking the time to reply dogshome.

I think mum is just going to keep the account in her name until the house sells and my brother can find the best supplier for him when he gets his house.

Good to know that my mum wont pay the termination fees though :)
