My old and faithful desktop needs external backup.

My requirements:

1. easy to use
2. external power supply
3. 1TB

I've seen:

a) Buffalo DriveStation 1.0TB USB 2.0 External Hard Disk Drive on amazon for £72 ( £80 on ebuyer)

b) Hitachi XL Series 1TB USB 2.0 External Desktop Hard Drive on ebuyer for £70 (£79 on amazon)

c) Western Digital Elements 1TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive amazon £70 (ebuyer £80)

Any feedback?

I have both a WD Elements and a Buffalo Drivestation. The Buffalo is very noisy, the WD virtually silent. I'd not buy Buffalo again.

I bought a Seagate internal 1TB drive for my desktop to use for backups and replace one of two 350GB drives I had in it. I use Windows 7 "backup and restore" to backup my data files daily (incremental backup) and bought a USB caddy to use the removed drive as an external one. Slightly different approach but works well for me.
All 3 drives are Seagate and I've had no trouble with them.

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/sataover1tb/hd204ui.html 2tb harddrive, erm they where £90.68 2 days ago. and now £95.99

currently got 5 samsungs 3x2tb 1x1.5tb and 1x1tb, the wd is a 1.5tb and i dont know if i will install it or not.
  • I have 2 WD 1tb HDD and have nothing but trouble with them. I would advise to steer clear of them

The desktop itself is old and I've been advised I'm better off with a psu.

hitachi are owned by WD now. so make your own conclusions.
personally i'd go with a samsung, maxtor or seagate, providing seagate have fixed their issues which that had 2 years ago with firmware.

just my personal feelings towards the makers

    samsung 100%
    maxtor 99.9%
seagate 75% due to the issues 2 years ago with their 1.5tb drive and firmware. didnt buy 1 at the time. so grateful
    Fujitsu 99%
Western Digital 0% even though they have replace the drives twice. dont know how long this one will last. if i'm even going to connect it.
hitachi before WD bought them 80% after 20%
