18185: reliable?

I would like to use 18185 for some of my calls, but I'm a bit nervous about signing up with a company that has no contact details whatsoever (is that even legal? I thought it was compulsory to give details because of DSR, and also general contract law?).

They sound really dodgy, but at the same time it sounds like a lot of people here use them so they can't be that bad ??

What do you do if there is a problem like a mistake with their billing?

EDIT: found a number buried within their t&c 0808 170 18185

You cannot speak to them by phone (that number you found is just a number via which you can find out your customer number) so, if you have a problem, the only way to contact them is via the webmail form on their website.

Having said that, I have never had a problem with billing in the 6½ years I have been using them.

If you're still worried, cover yourself by using the Direct Debit method of payment (not continuous payment authority on a debit or credit card) so that, if something went drastically wrong, you could get your money back easily.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Like Heinz, I've been using 18185 for many years and have never had a problem with them.

Friends who I've introduced to them all say they find the service invaluable and saves them a lot of money.

I found 18185 through MSE, and I use them every time I call my Mrs' family in Russia (2p per minute + connection charge, still cheaper than BT or TalkTalk by a fair whack).

Another vote here for 18185 - I'm only paying ~ 80p per month for daytime calls now - Last month with BT it would have been ~ £8 call charge (cheaper to take Anytime package!)
Also,as per Heinz, set it up using DD - I haven't had any problems in the 3 years I've been using the service but it gives peace of mind and you usually get an email 10-12 days before they take the DD.

Nor to 0843/4 or 0871/2/3 numbers.

To get those included in your indirect provider, try savacalldirect.com .They are a really cheap and good indirect call provider too.

But they are more expensive then if you were to dial those 08 numbers direct from your BT Line.
