Today we besan chilli (chickpea flour omelette mentioned earlier) for the first time and it was fantastic. Made a nice breakfast with some microwaved, sliced and fried sweet potatoes sprinkled with garlic powder.

Lunch was a seeded wrap filled with guacamole, with some melon and orange slices and a handful of cashews and almonds.

Sorry I'm turning this into a "What vegan food did I eat today" thread :rotfl:

Tonight we are going out in Soho unexpectedly so might try and grab something from a Japanese place or something for dinner.

On that topic can I recommend 'Woktastic' sushi bar, I'm not sure if it's a chain. In the first few weeks of DD's going vegan we took them all into Birmingham along with some non vegan friends of theirs for shopping/art gallery/museums ect. We stayed longer than expected and then we were stumped how to find food to suit vegans and typical teenagers. One of the non vegans always wanted to try a sushi bar so we went in - I explained problem to staff and they said no worries at all - they would get the chef to make vegan dishes and point them out to them going round the conveyor belt. OH and I did not stay as we had other errands to attend to, but the girls stayed for almost an 90mins eating vegan food to their hearts content. The staff definitely went out of their way for them.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

That's fantastic shandyclover. A few months ago we did a 'mums night out' with other mums from DDs class and went to a country pub. Looking at the menu online I realised the only veggie option was full of cheese. One quick email explaining we were vegan and they made sure the soup of the day was vegan and cooked us a veg risotto especially. Ok, it wasn't terribly exciting but it was nice to be included especially because we live in a place where most independent places hardly cater for veggies at all :)

Happy Cow is good for finding places to eat.

There are some great places in Brum:
Cafe Soya is fab and the portions are huge (ask for vegan menu), as is the Warehouse Cafe.:D
Veged Out is supposed to be good, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the info O.W.E.I. Will definitely have to check those out when I'm next in Brum with the girls. As youngest DD is loves asian food, and is also very into the indie music and art scene I can predict Soya Cafe and Veged Out are going to be particularly a hit!

I'd think that your best bets for packed would be -

    - vegan soup (pumpkin, lentil, whatever) in a regular coffee flask and a roll
    - rice / cous cous salads, can be made very cheap
    - Leftover veggie chili stir fried with rice and made into a pilaf
    - for that matter, just veggie chili if she can keep it warm in a food flask
    - Sandwiches with veggie faux meat. I used to LOVE tescos basics veggie burgers when I lived in the UK, you'd have to check if they are vegan but they were cheap and just fine to eat lukewarm with some fixings.

The best veggie / vegan food I had in the UK was hands down at Food for Thought in Covent Garden. Excellent, all veggie and mostly vegan food, but really substantial and delicious. Not too expensive either, considering the location.

  • Food Flask Tip:

Fill the flask with boiling water and put the lid on:

    Wait 10 minutes:

    Empty Flask of hot water:

Put piping hot food in it:

Heating the flask up first will allow your food to stay hotter for longer:

Also take a SPORK. If you are unsure what a spork is, google it. I'm sure you will work it out.
  • Sistema do a two tier, bpa free tub with a spoon that I can't recommend enough - on amazon for a fiver.

It's marketed for cereal and milk on the go, but I use mine for all sorts. Soygurt (decanted from big tub) and granola/muesli. Fruit salad and soygurt. Hummus or other dip and chopped up veg/fruit/pitta wedges. Porridge and topping (I have microwave access) Multibean or pasta salad and a few crackers. Huge number of options. The two bits are kept totally separate so no squishy cereal or dip all over everything. While it's not huge in size, I snack a lot during the day at uni and this really stops me from getting desperate and eating packets of doritos, especially if I miss breakfast.

I'm also a big fan of the Systema salad bowl lunchbox as it's a great size for leftovers and pretty robust.
