Best laser printer??

Can anybody point me in the right direction for laser printers for small business use??

I would like something which is economical to use.

Thanks.

  • The general way that printers become more econimical to run is to buy the biger printers, they tend to have larger toner cartridges there for cost per page is lower and you get more pages per toner. The downside is the printers cost more to buy and the toner cartridges tend to be sliglty more expesive to buy but you dont replace them as often.

Oki laser printers tend to have lower runincosts overall I have found, they use a toner and a sepearate imageing drum the drums cost £100+ but the toners cosnt about £15 each drum should last for 4 toners.

    rough prices
£160 for 20000 pages on an oki
the cheaper hp carts are about £50-£60 so the same 20000 pages could cost £200-£260 as they last for about 4000 pages each

all page numbers are alleged but gives you a rough idea.

I have been buying office printers etc from SCC Exchange. They are quick, reliable always have good deals going, click on the Best Buys link at the top of the page.

  • I just typed a really good reply for you guys but my browser crashed when I hit submit so here goes again

A quick small mono laser printer is the Hp LaserJet 1018, 1020, 1022, toners cost about £35- £40 200 pages per toner so a page cost of about 2p. they can be shared and I there is a network version of the 1022 cost is about £100 the 1018 can be found as low as £50 at dabs.com. I have installed these without problems shared between 2-4 people quick enough and can deal with the workload

The more workload the printer is required to do the more you need to spend, the above printer probably won't be able to handle more than 10 users and I would never recommend such a small printer for more than 6 users.

The next one up is the 2015, this is a stop gap really between the full featured 4000 series and the small personal printer like the 1018, 20 and 22. the 2015 printers have all the features available like duplex, networking and multiple paper sources available but isn’t really designed to do the workload of a large office, speeds are good and it will deal with 15000 pages a month which is serious printing but will kill the thing and I expect at the speeds it will need to print constantly to reach that figure. HP recommend this if you print up to about 3000 pages a month if your printing more then you need the 4000 series which is happy to go all the way to 12000 pages a month. it is a far more robust machine.

The 2015 toners cost about £45 but last for 3000 pages making page costs lower at about 1.5p

if you decide to go for the 4000 series then you can make use of the standard or large capacity toners the large ones again reduce the cost per page, the printers cost more to buy an the toners cost slightly more but you get a better printer and cheaper running costs.

A few things to consider for you
How much you want to spend?
How many people will be using the printer?
Is it possible to locate 1 large printer centrally or will people moan at having to get up and go collect their print jobs? The number of places I have recommended 2 or 3 2000 series rather than 1 4000 series or bigger so people don’t need to walk as far then go for the 4000 then a few months later we are installing extra printers is not funny. so take that in to consideration.
Does anyone ever run long print jobs that would tie the printer up for a period of time? The bigger printer would clear the job quicker but it would also be unavailable for anyone else to use, you have a few options when this is a problem, buy the big one for the office and buy a smaller one for occasional use like long print jobs send the long jobs to the small printer and the big one is kept free. it also give you some back up if 1 of the printers fails you can just reroute the print jobs. some places by 2 4000's and spread the load but should the worst happen they are more than capable of printing for the whole office, the printers in this situation are usually sat side by side.
