Hi thete, can anyone help.

Went into Tescos this afternoon, my son waited for me while I paid for a couple of items.
I heard a metal clang while at the till.i looked round couldn't see anything.
Then got to my son, who then told me a metal tool, looking like a wrench just fell from the roof, and nearly hit him on the head. It did hit his foot.
The tesco has no ceiling, they are doing something, all you see is wires, etc. no safety nets nothing.
I told customer services, they got a stock manager, who then told me he'd speak to the store manager and I will hear from him in the morning.
I took his name, took pics of the ceiling.
Where do I stand, as this is a major health and safety issue. No incident report was wrote. But I wrote down time etc.
Any help on wht I can expect to be done or any info would be helpful.
Thanks
have a nice day

    I've been Money Tipped!
If you are concerned that someone may be injured then you can contact your local council and ask to speak to someone who deals with health and safety at work - usually it's someone in environmental health but depending on what the local set up is they may refer you to the Health and Safety Executive - and explain your concerns to them. They can investigate, make recommendations or even stop the work from carrying on until measures are in place for it to be done safely.

If you're hoping to get some sort of compensation for a near miss, I don't think that's very likely (nor should it be IMHO as you haven't suffered any injury or loss).
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

You'll probably get an apology, maybe some flowers and a gift voucher but if you start nagging them for compensation you could well hit a brick wall - was any injury actually caused?

Life's full of near misses, I'd just be incredibly glad he's OK. :)

What is it that you would like to be done? Am I being cynical here and thinking financial compensation?
When your life is a mess, stop and think what you are doing before bringing more kids into it, it's not fair on them.

    Hi,
No I'm extremely happy it didn't hit my son, because it would've caused some damage.
My concern is more that the person I spoke to said, the workmen keep leaving tools about like that,up in the roof.
I am thinking of contacting the health and safety, what if a tool like that hit a baby in a trolley.
Yes life is full of accidents and what ifs,but it's also full of people not doing thier jobs right and following the proper procedures.
    Thanks for replies :-)

Why is it that the OP asked what she should do and everyone jumps to the conclusion she is straight way thinking financial compensation??

In this instance it hasnt hit the son on the head causing untold injury otherwise we would be reading about it on the news and on the front page of every paper.

The shop manager should have filled in a report, although he wasnt injured this was a near miss and in the eyes of the HSE is a reportable dangerous occurrence - If something happens which does not result in a reportable injury, but which clearly could have done, then it may be a dangerous occurrence which must be reported immediately.

I would take browneyedbazzi's advise and speak to your local council or even go straight to the HSE.

OP I am glad your son is ok, but someone else might not be so lucky.

Write to head office advising them of the incident and how you are reporting it to the relevant authority involved in health and safety at work. I'm betting you will get a much better response from somebody higher up in the food chain.

If the workmen are being so reckless as to leave tools in a roof which could seriously injure somebody then you have every right to complain and expect a satisfactory response and assurance they are taking it seriously!!!
