Sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone know of any decent FREE accounting software suitable for a small business, not VAT registered?

Failing that, is Quickbooks most basic version (£9/month I think) any good?

At the moment I use Brightbook which is free and straightforward to use (and yes you can change the colour scheme!)

Alternatively if you are quick, Quickbooks Pro 2012 is currently only £89.99 at PC World, though it might be a one day only deal.

I wonder just how secure these types of on line accounting packages are. Who can see all the data you input?, what can they do with it? and why are they providing such a service for free? What happens if their server goes down etc etc.

I prefer to continue with my excel system along with my hard copy back up.

I wanted to look at exactly what the income and expenditure had been (they had suddenly gone from a large profit to loss). I couldn't because I didn't have Sage and apparently I would have to buy it order to do so ...

i use qb simple start which you can buy outright rather than paying £10 per month or what ever the price is , it's fairly straightforward to use and you can export data to other software your accountant may be using
