Useless service at Santander

Tried to open a Santander e-savings account when I saw the rates shown on MSE.
DREADFUL service. It took forever. I was asked for a change of details form when I'd never had a Santander account so wasn't sure what detail had supposedly changed. Turns out it was from an Abbey account I had over 25 years ago!
Then told that if I did it over the phone, rather than online, my account would be up and running by Saturday and I'd get all the details through by then. So having already spent time applying online, I then spent time applying over the phone.
Then I got a letter on Saturday not with my account details as expected but asking for the proof of ID details that I'd already sent. The letter had a number on saying I could call Mon - Fri and Saturday 9 - 4 with my reference number. When I called, I was told that department wasn't open on Saturday. So the point of saying that it was .... ????
Just crap service really.
Am going with West Brom. Might be 0.2% less but the account is already open (I only applied on Saturday!) and the customer services people on the phone were REALLY helpful!

    Sound like not a lot has changed since I had a lot of problems with them 4 years ago. I promised I would never ever have anything to do with Santander again - they are a nightmare to deal with when you decide to go elsewhere.
    I just cannot understand why they spend so much money on advertising to get new customers and then treat them so badly.
    I hope messages like the OP will put others off dealing with them.

    After two weeks of tearing my hair out over Virgin Media and their incompetencies, I am SO hacked off at my time being wasted by yet another bunch of eejits!
    Thank goodness for West Brom (and Birmingham Midshires!) who answered the phone promptly and were helpful and sorted out stuff really quickly too. Good to know some companies still know the meaning of customer service. (And LV car insurance and First Direct too - love 'em!)
    Honestly, I've felt like I've been turning into a Grumpy Old Woman this week dealing with everything!
