Car Insurance Claim - Refused (Help!)

Long story short, a month ago on the way home from work car lost all power and smoke filled the cab. I got out, smoke coming from bonnet which I opened and had a look and found a fire in a part of the engine. I called the fire brigade who arrived but by the time they came it had burnt out, although they did say that it was the right thing to do.

Anyway, insurance arranged for it to be recovered. After various phone calls and chasing up waiting for inspection reports after a month (yes a month today), Ive finally got a reply from the Insurance Company which states..

"I can confirm that we have now received the engineers report for your vehicle; the report confirms that there has been a mechanical fault which in the policy terms we would not cover, however I have referred this to our indemnity department for there advise and confirmation of this.

I have requested that this can be reviewed as an urgent for you due to delays already caused and as soon as we have a response we will contact you further."

Car was insured on 3rd party fire and theft. Can anyone shed any light as to where to go from here please ?

Thanks..

If there was a mechanical fault you would not be covered for that but you would normally be covered for the resultant damage to the rest of the car.

So in the classic example, if there is a faulty wire that caused the fire they wont pay for that wire to be replaced but they will pay for the damage the flames did to the rest of the vehicle. Obviously you need to know both what the faulty part(s) were that caused the fire and what other part(s) were damaged in the fire.

Ultimately you need to read your policybook to see what it says or provide a link to it on here
