Home insurance for property that does not have key operated window locks - Help!

Hi,

We have recently moved into a Victorian property with sash windows. We have been trying to obtain contents insurance, however we have been unable to because our windows do not have key operated locks (our windows screw down to lock the windows together instead), which all the policies we have looked at list as a minimum security requirement.

I was wondering of anyone knows of any company that may insure us without key operated locks on our windows? Or any other advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Where are you looking? The locks on my windows are inoperative so I just don't click that option - never had a problem getting insurance.

Is there any reason you dont want to add locks to the windows? There are a variety of after market ones you can fit with minimal effort.

Alternatively speak to a local broker (not swinton) who will be able to get you a policy with an endorsement to remove the locks requirement in exchange for a loading.

Could I ask who you have insurance with? All the companies that I'm looking at/getting quotes from list having key operated window locks as a minimum requirement (i.e. they won't provide contents insurance without them). I don't have the option not to click that option consequently!

They wont pay out if :
You can not provide a security certificate for the locks and a receipt to show they were fitted in approval with the manufacturers recommendations.
They are real slippy devils when it comes to pay out time.

Our flat is rented and so it means asking our landlord to fit locks on all our windows which he will be reluctant to do..my next step if I can't find anyone who will insure us would be to talk to him about fitting locks!

Thanks for the broker suggestion, I'll investigate that further :)
