I have just started working on a self employed basis as a carer. Can anyone recommend a basic bookkeeping book? Also, I am now in receipt of my State pension - will I still need to pay NI? Many thanks.

You will need to register as self employed iof you haven't already done so with HMRC. If you don't earn in excess of £5xxx you can apply for national insurance exemption.
For records, use Excel, you don't need anything complicated, income, outgoing, total.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
If you want a hard copy then the simplex D book is all you need http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&gs_nf=1&cp=10&gs_id=w&xhr=t&q=accounts+book&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1680&bih=869&wrapid=tljp1331055206250019&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=6964647910667092751&sa=X&ei=bEpWT7PVAq-A0AXT55TlCQ&sqi=2&ved=0CHwQ8wIwAg#0

And if you don't have Excel or its equivalent inside Microsoft Works then there's the spreadsheet inside Google docs0
