I have just started working on a self employed basis as a carer. Can anyone recommend a basic bookkeeping book? Also, I am now in receipt of my State pension - will I still need to pay NI? Many thanks.

You will need to register as self employed iof you haven't already done so with HMRC. If you don't earn in excess of £5xxx you can apply for national insurance exemption.

For records, use Excel, you don't need anything complicated, income, outgoing, total.

And if you don't have Excel or its equivalent inside Microsoft Works then there's the spreadsheet inside Google docs
