Has anyone got a recipe for bonio like dog biscuits? My 2 love them and they keep their teeth in perfect condition BUT they went up by 30p this week to a whopping £1.69 for just over 500gms  DH gets through 3 boxes a week on his beloved girlies:(

Someone posted some links to home made dog biscuits a while ago and Kryl also posted a recipe for dog flapjacks, I haven't got round to making any yet but when Pullip comes round to do my cleaning, I'll perhaps have a go!! lol
My vet says not to give dogs too many though as they are fattening - Bonios that is - and the others would be too. Three boxes a week seems an awful lot, how many dogs have you got. A box of the chicken ones lasts my dog 3-4 weeks as I only give him one a day.0 -
Someone I knew but have not seen in ages used to make liver treats at home for thier dogs - tiney little ones, training treat size (Nonios are massiveeeeeeeeeeeeee), cant remember how though0

Have found a recipe that they seem to like. I know that 3 boxes sounds a lot but, honestly, they are not in the least bit overweight as they are well exercised twice a day, once in the forest and once on the beach and are checked every year by the vet who always compliments us on their great health and shiny coats. They are 7 and 8 and have wonderful white teeth which I desperately want to keep up without the cost of the Bonios. They are both rescues from dreadful backgrounds so we do spoil them a wee bit I must admit, 2 Divas here!
Will post the recipe if anyone is interested. They work out about 1/3 of the price if not cheaper.0 -
Yes please would love recipe. Going start baking for our dog, at least I will know what is in them.

Here it is, sorry it is in US weights but you can just use a tea cup. I used some lard and some dripping that I had in the fridge instead of marg, and next time will maybe try olive oil instead just cos I am not a lover of marg, I did add a Maggie seasoning cube too just for taste but don't think it was totally necessary. They love them.
¾ cup hot water
1⁄3; cup margarine
½ cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg , beaten
3 cups whole wheat flour
Directions:
In large bowl pour hot water over the margarine. Stir in powdered milk, salt, and egg. Add flour, 1/2 cup at a time. Knead for a few minutes to form stiff dough. Pat or roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into bone shapes. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool. They will dry out quite hard. Makes about 1 1/4 pounds of biscuits
Think I may also leave the salt out next time, maybe add some curry powder as my two adore any curry!!!0 -
I would have to swap chicken stock for the hot water as the chicken Bonios are the only ones my dog will eat.
I've found the link to lots of recipes - http://www.bullwrinkle.com/Assets/Recipes/Recipes.htm0 -
No need for margarine or milk - many dogs can be lactose-intolerant so avoiding dairy can be a good idea, and margarine isn't one of the healthiest ingredients! I tend to mimic human baking recipes but swap out the "bad" ingredients, e.g. no butter/marg but I'll put a couple of tablespoons of oil in instead (I use their posh salmon oil, or olive oil, but other oils will do). No sugar, but I may add sweetness with grated carrot. Chicken stock is a good way to add flavour - I make my own salt-free one by simmering a chicken bone in a pan of water for a while (make a big batch and freeze the excess for future baking). Adding in blended liver or fish (tinned fish works too) to add flavour can make some really yummy, smelly treats for training.
For biscuits I would use an egg or two, a few tablespoons of oil, 1/2-1 cup of stock and then keep adding flour (I use wheat-free flours, like buckwheat or gram) until it makes a rollable dough. Roll into a sheet or cut into shapes (you can buy bone-shaped cutters for Bonio-shaped biscuits) and bake for 10-15 mins at 180. If you end up with more dough than you need, you can freeze it for a later date (or bake it all and freeze the baked biscuits)0
