Sulphate Attack - Do I declare it as slip or heave?

We're in the process of buying a property, that has previously been damaged by Sulphate attack caused by water damage.

The householder's insurance company paid for repair.

As sulphate damage is excluded from insurance claims, when I get a quote from the screenscrapers do I need to tell them that their has been slip or heave?

I do not want to be underhand, it's just that the quote was £350 without telling them, but £1200 if I do.

If it's not covered, it seems a little unfair!

Grateful for any advice on our best course of action.

TIA,

Alan.

I don't think it's either and you're going to pay unnecessarily if you disclose it that way.

Presumably, the previous owners have had the floors dug up and the offending material removed from the sub-floors and a membrane installed under a new floor?

As this is not going to happen again once rectified, it doesn't fit the profile of the likes of subsidence.

I suggest you input nothing, but ring the insurers on your shortlist to explain to them what has happened.

If you are unsuccessful, I'd talk to a broker as the broker firms like Paymentshield, Towergate and Select & Protect will know all about this issue and be able to deal with it without too much drama.

  • Thanks, that's what I was thinking of doing.

I have a full building survey booked for Friday and will see what that turns up.
