Claiming against a PPI policy refused

Hi,

I've been paying PPI on an RBS credit card for a couple of years now, and not an insignificant amount.

In January, I was made redundant and set about getting new employment. I was fortunate enough to get a couple of months salary as a severance when I left and consequently didn't register for unemployment straight away.

I've now got a job (although essentially only as self employed contractor) and naturally want to claim against my policy for the period I was unemployed but have been told by RBS that because I did not register for unemployment benefit I am not entitled...

Surely that cannot be correct, I pay my premiums and I have my letter of notice and P45 from my previous employer, I was as unemployed as anyone, whether I claims job seekers or not is irrelevant isn't it?

    What do the terms say?

They usually require you to register as unemployed which demonstrates some willingness to look for alternative work

Unfortunately it is most likely something in the terms and conditions as it was with my PPI thing. This is another reason I am loathe to get PPI for anything ever again.
Debt at worst: £33000 (Feb 2011). Present debt: £25610 (Apr 2012)

The key here is when did your employment officially terminate and what period of time have the paid you for in lieu of notice.

e.g. If you finished work on 10th Jauaryn, got paid 1 month in lieu of notice and a month's redundancy pay it's not unreasonable to say that your real termination date is 10th February.

Most PPI policies exclude payment within a month of termination. So if your termination is effectively some time in Feb and you're already working in early March their refusal to decline payment seems to be reasonable.

Regardless, if that's not the case your failure to claim Job Seekers looks like a mistake on your part.

If the policy definitions say you should be registered for Job Seekers Allowance and you didn't bother, I can understand their refusal to pay.
