well exactly. Laptops, ipads etc are all well and good but really you need no technological helps to get a decent degree!

I went to a university that had lots of computer rooms, but even so there were massive queues out the doors frequently. They put time limits on them in the end. There was no way you could have spent hours writing essays on them. The rooms were also noisy at times, despite people's best efforts, so not the best place to concentrate.

The essay format was often very strict, with exact font, size and spacing given, and a different size and placement for references. Not easy on a typewriter!

It's such a middle class problem though. Some people hold down several jobs to get a degree and raise a family. They are never going to make a film about the struggle of a middle class man who didn't have a laptop so had to queue for the computer room...

  • I would get a refurbished IPad2! The Apps are the big killer thing on it and lightness.
With other Tablet PCs you do get Apps but not like the Apple App Store (unfortunately).
My money is on the Ipad2 for a Tablet PC and conventional Laptop for other PC activity.
( I am not anti-Laptop this little Baby was revolutionary for me).

  • @jazzabelle that's why having your own equipment an Ipad or an Laptop is so essential.
Students cannot afford to have Assignments delayed by having to queue at the Computer Room.
Although it seems indulgent, in fact it is an essential just like other Fixed Costs associated with University, Food, Books etc. (and as cheaply as possible!!).

  • Standard Assignments require use of Laptop/Computer /Ipad Then you can email your Assigment and or hand in hard copy and email copy.
Computer ownership I think is specified on University Undergraduate and PG Equipment Lists.
(I graduated from Essex with BA Hons Govt/Soc so I know!)
Computers are needed to use sophisticated Programmes such as Mathematica used for Science Courses, analyse Discourse (special progs for) and other Mission Critical Learning Activities.

  • Unfortunately you have to hand write your Examinations Scripts though! So good legible handwriting as well as excellent academic skills are in order.

I was at uni 97-2000. All essays had to be typed, iPads didn't exist and laptops were very rare. I coped as did all my friends. Laptops and iPads are luxuries. They make life easier but there is no way that they are essential. To be essential there has to be no other alternative. If the computer rooms are so busy that only goes to show alot of students are coping without their own private laptop as they are using the computer room.

If you can afford a laptop or iPad fair play I have no problems with that, but trying to make out you cannot survive at uni without them is just a blatant lie!
