Bank cashed cheque for £83.69 as £831.69

I wrote a cheque on 5th Feb for £83.69 and my bank has cashed it as £831.69 on 13th Feb. I'm still trying to get it sorted and meanwhile I'm still £748 down and not happy

They are saying that its not their fault and the bank who cashed it keyed it in wrong and that its up to me to chase it up. I can't understand how that can be the case as as far as I see they are in the wrong just as much! I'm going round in circles and getting nowhere, first they told me I needed to get a copy of the cheque which I have done and now they say they need to get a copy of the cheque.

Can anyone offer any advice? One I do get it sorted can I make any calaim for all the hassle? phonecalls? being out of pocket etc?

  • The mistake was made by the bank that the cheque was originally paid in to, if you have been debited too much, the person that you gave the cheque to will have been credited too much. Your bank should take this up on your behalf.

Absolute tripe, they are the first to hand out charges when its your fault.
Get down to your branch and get the manager, threaten to take your business elsewhere if its not sorted there and then.

Write in down on paper as well and also write out an invoice for £ 30 and cheekily give it to them and watch them squirm, its worth £ 30 for the entertainment value.

    Good luck.

I have a similar thing going on with my bank at the moment. I paid in a cheque for £6.50 and it was credited to my account as £6.50. However it then seems it was put through the clearing system as £61.50 and it subsequently bounced- but guess what, they debited the full £61.50 from my account when they returned the cheque!

They are sorting it out for me but warn there is a charge for getting copies of a cheque if it is found to be my error! All I have done i try to pay a cheque in and I am £55 out of pocket. I feel for the lady who wrote the cheque too as she will probably be going through the same thing as you and have been charged for the priveledge.

Sorry, can you explain what went on there? How did you get a copy of the cheque if it wasn't from your bank? Are they now asking you to provide a copy of what they provided to you?

OK the answer is simple but it needs someone who knows what they are doing to sort it out.

Firstly, your bank should have, immediatly, obtained a copy of the cheque. This can often be done within hours since many banks scan them now, but even the old fashoned way of keeping them in archive boxes shouldn't take more than a couple of days (especially if it was only a recent cheque, since those boxes should be easily available).

Then, upon seeing the mistake, the bank should IMMEDIATLY re-credit their customer with the difference, as well as any charges incurred.

The bank then have to settle it with the other bank. It will actually be the other bank's fault in all probibility because they will have encoded the cheque wrongly. However, your bank have a responsibility to only allow debits you have authorised, and you did not authorise this one.

Tell them they are in breach of the banking code, and ask them to register as a complaint. Although, really, that shouldn't be necessery, it starts the clock ticking as they have to resolve complaints quickly (ish).

Go down your bank and ask for a manager and the stupid bird might say what for, say I have won the euro millions lottery for 30 million and want to bank the cheque and want a good interest rate and only want to see manager otherwise you will go to another bank that will and then when you get in his office, give him what for.
    Kind Regards
