Redundancy and PPI

Hello all
I've been made redundant with my last day being end of this month.
I've got a secured loan with Picture and have PPI on it, but it runs out on 11th April. Does anyone have any experience with claiming on PPI? I was reading and the way I understand it, Picture will only paid for as long as the insurance is valid. Is this correct?
I would have thought that if I claimed today let's say it would cover my payments for the 12 mths once the insurance was active when I claimed?
Sorry if I'm being a thicko.
Thanks
