    Since the claim is in the system now, the only possible benefit to settling privately is to keep your NCB if this is not currently protected. It's going to affect your premium either way.

    Don't worry about your excess. You pay that for damage to your own car, your insurance will pay for the repairs to the BMW in full.

    The fact that that guy screwed up his own insurance and has ended up having to pay more is 100% not your fault and should be of no concern to you. There's also a possibility he's trying to scam you for more money.


    I'm all for settling privately and keeping it off the system. Done correctly it keeps everyone's costs down and means less hassle for everyone involved, but in this situation it's definitely time to have the insurance handle it.
  • If the bumper is replaced and you settle privately it WILL cost you the best part of a thousand pounds. You have been warned :)

    I repair cars for a living, and yes most bumpers can be repaired.

    And insurance companies are well aware of this.
