Windows Updates

Please can someone tell me how to turn off automatic updates? Everytime my Vaio does a restart it stalls and won't load all the programs and I can only get going again by using Go-Back, this has happened several times in last couple of days (suspect it keeps trying to update the same thing everytime I go back) and I keep losing work (have now put on mem stick). I am beginning to wonder if I should restore to the factory settings to get round this, although hibernating and keeping it going is fine.
Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Click Start , click Control Panel , and then double-click System.
Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click Turn off automatic updating. I want to update my computer manually

Why do you think automatic updates is causing the problem?

Don't know if it was the last round of patches (or me), but I've had to switch it off on all my pc's recently, do a manual upgrade and then switch it back on again. I was getting the ?svchost.dll? caused a crash message followed by a grinding to a holt followed by a crash. All gone now.
