computer freezes

got an ipod a few months ago and as soon as i plugged the USB cable in the pc froze-had to switch off at the wall.the noise it made was horrendous.tried 3 times and in the end sent the ipod back.now i recently got a new mobile and the same thing happened.what i want to know is what the problem might be and if i can sort it?

Had a desktop brought in a couple of weeks ago, where the front USB sockets had been incorrectly wired to the SPDIF socket on the mainboard.
If a laptop this isn't relevant,,,,,Could also answer whether you were using the (same) sockets in the front or the back?0 -
using XP and it's an HP compaq
it's a desktop and i use the ports at the front ( it's always been ok for mouse and camera etc and they're easier to get to!)0
