money going out, but didnt actually go...

Hi guys,
i went out for a meal on valentines night with my better half.
the meal came to £45.15 ( paid by Visa debit card)
the next day, online banking showed that this money was 'going to be coming out'
i.e it showed as still there, but the 'available balance' was £45.15 less, as you would expect.
the account was like this for over a week now and today the £45.15 has never come out and my 'available balance' is back to normal.

how could this happen..... will this £45.15 never come out now?
anyone ever had this happen before?

What's happened is that the company pre-authorised the money.

The result is that it's removed from your balance. However, it requires the business to then reconcile those transactions. Most will do this almost immediately.

In this case - it looks like the company might batch up their transactions.

You'll find a number of internet firms will do a similar thing - normally they'll pre-auth just £1 to check the card is valid.

  • so have they messed up?
or will it come out eventually, coz there is no sign now of any transaction taking place

Yes - it will almost certainly still come out.

I get this every so often with internet transactions. A flight I booked recently did a similar thing - it pre-authed the money, but it took a further week and a half to actually get charged.
  • ok, cheers for that!:money:

It's possible that they are not going to charge you as they feel you have been soooo mean spending only £45.15 on your better half for Valentines night ..... ;-)
