should i format?

Hi
I have put my camera's memory card into a card reader, then plugged that into a USB port. This is not the first time i have done this, but i have a bunch of new photos I want to upload.

This time however it says "The drive in drive F is not formatted. Do you want to format now?"

I haven't had this before, and thought that formatting would wipe the memory and I would lose the photos. Is that correct, what can i do?
Thanks.

Yes, you are correct: if you format, you will lose all contents.
    Try something like PhotoRescue:

I don't know what the limitations of the demo version are though.

If you put it back in your camera can you read it? If so, can you use the camera as a card reader to copy the files to your pc?
  • I have just put the card back in the camera, and no it wont read it, it says card error.

I know it was working 2 days ago, as I took some pictures and looked at them.

    What can have gone wrong?

Your only hope then is to try to recovery your pictures using one of the many data recovery programs see here If you can get your pictures off, you should then format the card in the camera. Personally I always use the camera to read the pictures to the PC, using a cable, even though I have a card reader. It could even be the card reader that has caused this problem, as some can only read up to a certain size card!

Even if you can get your files off the card I'd be tempted to ditch it and buy a new one.
