Screen problem when browsing the net

I have a toshiba laptop, and for some reason when browsing the net, in any browser (firefox, chrome, or ie), there is a white band running down each side of the screen, with the internet page in the middle looking all squashed up. I have tried changing the screen display resolution, with no success, as well as making the screen bigger, with control +. Using microsoft word, or excel, everything is ok, so the problem only happens when browsing the net. Does anyone have any other ideas please?
Thanks for your help

Did your laptop always do this, or recently start it?
Perhaps you could post a screenshot of the squashed up browser - that should help pinpoint it. Weird that it occurs in all browsers!0
