Floor advice please

  • I was in a very similar position to you some 40 years ago. House needing lots of work, no DIY experience and little money. From my experience I would say take the leap of faith and go for it. I made the mistake of make do and mend for some years before realising that I was wasting a lot of time and effort for a very short term benefit.

You will probably find the floor is in quite good order and at the most would need sanding and you can then treat the floor directly at a reasonable cost. You may of course find you have a rather big gap under the doors?

    Hi Sloughflint

We did exactly the same, except we were not so fortunate in that the floor boards were in a right state! In your case as the floor boards are in good condition in places where you have looked it is very likely that you will be OK.

I recomend a good sanding and varnish/wood stain and you will have a very nice floor indeed.

Let us know how you get on.

And a quickie before I get going.
Am I naive in thinking I can sand it by hand? Should I consider hiring a machine?

    Hi Sloughflint

From the size of the room I would highly recommend an industrial sanding machine from hire shop. I did a small area by hand and it was far too painful!
Word of caution do check the whole floor prior to sanding to make sure that there are no nails sticking out. Those that are knock them in so they are just below the surface.

You will save a lot of time and effort (and money!!)

  • Don't even think of sanding by hand. You will still be at it this time next year.
