Cheap Thai grocery store in London (NOT restaurants!) ;-)
Options
Hi :j
I am currently trying to find a thai sticky rice steamer, basket and cheesecloth such as this http://www.importfood.com/stickyrice.html (unfortunately US site), in London (anywhere in London), after 14 searches on google bring up irrelevant results.
Can anyone recommend a good asian / thai foodstore that sells these things at low price? I'm sure the bigger / specialist stores do but costly! Or online, if cost / delivery is cheaper to the UK? Can you buy these things from Thailand?
(These things must be sold cheaply somewhere... ?)
Where to buy large bag thai sticky rice (i.e. not tiny 500g bags) would be very helpful too :cheesy:

I think you might get more help in the local money saving board, so i'll move this over there for you.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

There used to be a small Thai supermarket on the Upper Richmond Road in Putney - I think it's still there but I haven't been that way in a while. It's near a Thai restaurant called Talad Thai, or something like that. There's also a Japanese food shop right near Putney Bridge, at the bottom end of the high street. There are lots of Korean stores in New Malden and they generally stock some Japanese and Thai stuff too. The New Malden Tesco (sorry ... ) also has a massive selection of ethnic foods, huge bags of different sorts of rice at fairly low prices. There is also an asian cash and carry in New Malden (Wing Yip, I think) but I don't know if it's trade only.
Chinatown in central London also has a big selection of asian food stores, and if I've been looking for something a bit 'odd' then I've generally found it there.
There's also a massive asian cash and carry near to Hangar Lane, called Hoo Hing. They have a website www .hoohing.com, and I think it's open to the public.0 -
https://www.thai4uk.com sells it, delivery and prices are quite reasonable. look under 'Cookware and Crockery'
they do the sticky rice too, its the Thai glutinous rice, in 1kg or 5 kg bags0 -
I'm in a hurry so I can't find the links for you, but there is a huge oriental food store in Colindale, or you could try Wing Yip in Croydon if you're in South London.0

Firstly, thank you ginghamribbon for moving the thread to the new board :-)
@gingernutmeg thank u for the tip, I'm not often near wandsworth but am often go to New Malden. I thought that area was mainly Korean community, never occurred to ask for thai stuff. It's a good tip though and I'll have a look next time I go and let you know ;-)0 -
@sioaeh thank u for the website recommendation.
My experience from searching however is that online sites are not as price competitive as they really should be (!).
as a quick price comparison:
1. https://www.thai4uk.com (online shop) Aluminium pot with bamboo basket - £17.91
2. https://www.thaismile.com (walk-in shop) aluminium pot with bamboo basket - £8.50
I reckon a few market traders or tucked away stores would have these possibly even cheaper.
That's the kind of thing I'm looking for.
I guess it would be the best option for those on this board who are not near city, and therefore a good tip :-)0 -
@filigree thank u for the tip, I'll look into it and see if I can find the name, thanks for the croydon store tip . :-)0

@karnam thank u for your tip, this is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for, areas that might sell to the local community therefore not a 'specialised' (and therefore more expensive) aisle in a supermarket but at reasonable, local prices. Does the chinese area stock thai equipment specifically though? I'm all for supporting local community :-)0
