Tesco pet insurance will not pay out.

Hi there,
Just looking for some advice. Our dog has just had an emergency hysterectomy this morning, her insurance with tesco's was renewed on the 1st march having already being insured with them the previous year.
They are saying that because it's not after the 14 day period from the 1st that they will not pay even though we were insured with them the previous year?
I did get a cheaper quote from their on line web site so changed to this, they are saying its a new policy?

Do I have any way of getting them to pay?

Thanks Phil

You didn't take up their renewal offer at the renewal price, so you effectively bought a new product by buying online - I would agree with them that it is a new policy.
Even if it was outside of this period, I know many policies exclude anything to do with spaying at all so I'd check your policy exclusions too.

Too late but next time consider buying a new policy 14 days before the old one expires, so you have no gap in cover. I hope your dog makes a full recovery from her op too.

Sorry, looks like this is a new policy and not continuation of the previous one... in which case the 14 day excusion would apply....

Really sorry to hear about your dog, hope she recovers well.
  • Thanks for your advice, I'm kicking my self here I should have started the policy 14 days before.
it wasn't about the money I just thought they were trying to get out of paying will remember next time,
    Thanks again guys.

Thanks for the info about this. I changed my dogs insurance this year and didnt think about "overlapping" so he was covered by the old policy until the new policy kicked in. Will make sure I do that next time.
  • Pjack sorry agree with the others it will be a new policy - so sorry.

Hope she's on the road to recovery soon.

Can I just say, while it's true most policies exclude anything to do with spaying or castrating, that would mean routine ops of this nature.

The OPs dog had an emergency hysterectomy which should be covered normally.

My old dog needed to be castrated as he developed a testicular tumour. The insurance company initially declined my claim but when I pointed out that it had been necessary surgery, they apologised and paid up.

    Hope your dog's ok, Pjack.
