Partitioning hard drive

Oh, dear this is going to sound a bit elementary to the techies!
I have re-installed XP Pro a few times on my computer and my son's. This time I decided that I would try putting the XP installation into a partition of 15gb so that I could re-install if necessary without wiping the whole disc (80GB).
After booting from the CD and going through the preliminaries, I created the necessary sized partition, formatted to NTFS, and installed XP.
Yes, you've guessed it, I now have a single HD of 15gb, presumably because I have not formatted the remainder of the disc!
What should I have done, and can I now retrieve the situation without starting from scratch?

Right click "My computer", click "Manage" (I use another way but some prefer the short way
), "Disk management".
In the list in the bottom right, select your drive, right click the "Unallocated" (I think) space and create a partition in there. It will ask you if you want to format it, say yes (else your drive will appaer but will not be usable until you format it anyway).0 -
