NTL & Direct Debit

Just had my NTL bill in and noticed that they are now charging me £5.00 as I do not pay by direct debit.
Can they legally do this.?
I do not want to pay by direct debit as the bills are differing amounts, being weekly paid I need to know exactly where I stand so that the other direct debits get paid.

Any help much appreciated.

Regards

Steve
