    Hello

My bag of caster sugar has gone rock hard - is there anything I can do?

I guess next time I should store it in an airtight container :o but I'd love to rescue this lot, too...

    Thanks!

I had this happen with caster sugar; I now keep it in a Le Parfait jar :o

Can you break lumps off it? If so, put them into a metal bowl (I use the bowl on my scales ) and crush with the back of a spoon).

If not, put into a bowl and put a moist tea towel over it. I've not tried this myself, but have been assured by others that it works ;)

either what Penny suggested, or, if you can break lumps off it but its too hard to break up further, try putting it into a food processor and whizzing it in there. make sure the bowl is completely dry first though.

In the past I've found that short blasts in the microwave, some prodding with a fork, and more short blasts in the microwave have worked.
  • Thanks Kethry and Penny! Off to try the damp tea towel trick...

  • My mum has had a bag of sugar like this for years :rotfl: me and my sister used to throw it against the work surface/floor to try and break lumps off and then usually give up and substitute a different kind of sugar! You will have to let us know if it works...
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right
  • I think I'd try putting into a couple of plastic bags on a chopping board or other solid surface and then bash with a rolling pin

I would have thought you could break it up as per the other posters. Once in chunks it would still work in rec where the sugar is melted, such as bonfire toffee, parkin etc so good timing for bonfire night yummy.

  • Break it up into lumps and then blitz it a food processor! Short bursts until it looks like caster sugar. The processing has been done, you just need to reverse the caking!
  • Place in a sealable container and either add a slice of bread or a few slices of apple and leave overnight it should be softened by morning
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

A couple of leaves of lettuce, or a damp piece of kitchen roll - pop in an airtight container overnight. The same as a piece of bread or apple but possibly cheaper! What it needs is moisture.
