Whats gone wrong?

OK, so my PC (desktop, vista 32bit dell computer about 5 years old) is playing up. I'll be reading a page and all of a sudden it goes blank- as in the colours stay but all the words vanish or the entire page goes white. Added to this the whole computer has really slowed down and its now a 50/50 chance that even when just scrolling a page I get a pop-up at the bottom of the screen telling me *insert page name here* not responding and to restore the page I need to click on a tab which never seems to respond to me clicking...



So I thought I'd check my virus protection. I have Microsoft Essentials and my computer seemed to think there were no problems with it.

Then I checked on the Windows Defender, I tried to open and was given the error message:
0x800106ba

I also have spybot running- is this the issue? Its been running alongside for the past few months, makes things a tad slower but nothing I can't live with.

Not sure if I can do anything to prevent the type vanishing every so often, its only started to do so in the past few days.

start at the beginning....run HiJackThis and post the log
