How do you manage to survive on your jobseekers money?

I don;t understand how people manage to survive on only 67.50 particularly when they live in expensive places like London.

How do YOU do it?

I live in the North East and although I don't pay rent per se I do give my parents most of my money for expenses and shopping etc. I always run out of money after about 10 days even though I do live quite frugally.

How do you personally make your money last? are you in debt?

My brother in law is on job seekers and lives with his dad. He gets his job seekers once a fortnight and blows it all within a day or two on computer games, but does help pay towards the electric.

He does do voluntary work and enjoys it, but cannot find a job. I think maybe if he spent the money that he spends on computer games on decent clothes for interviews then he might stand a better chance as he doesn't look at all presentable. I know there is a major job shortage but he isn't making any effort at all.

Most of the folks i know of are offered plenty ad-hoc work to keep them ticking over and their partners work.

If they are paying rent (not board and lodge) and they are going to try and live on jsa, and they apply for it, they will be getting it.

if you pay rent or board or whatever you want to call it in a house/flat and live with any family memeber you do not get housing benefit

Are you saying if you pay a family memeber rent and live in a property with them you get it?

    From Shelter

I live with other family members

If you are (or your partner is) renting a home from a close family member who shares all or part of the home with you, you won’t get housing benefit, even if you are paying them rent. This applies if you are renting from a:
    • parent or step-parent
    • father-in-law or mother-in-law
    • child or step-child
    • son-in-law or daughter-in-law
    • brother or sister (including half-brothers and half-sisters)
    • brother-in-law or sister-in-law
    • partner of any of the above.

I get £32.40 a week, as I have some savings and get less as I am under 25. Before I became unemployed, I always paid towards the household bills as then, as I do now, still live at home. How much I pay hasn't changed since I became unemployed and started on JSA - My parents can't afford to lower it, as it is a fair amount and actually need me to pay a little bit more.

In theory, I don't survive on what I receive on JSA, as what I pay to my parents monthly, isn't covered by my JSA, so I am losing money every month and that's before costs to interviews and other basic things. I don't waste the money and I'm grateful that I have some savings as they cover my losses, but unfortunately, my savings are obviously going down.

I am very lucky that from an interview last week, whilst unsuccessful, the company having looked over my qualifications, their needs and future plans and now offer me cover work when a staff member is ill/away on training etc. I was in 2 days last week and will be in 3 days this week. I also get paid for my break too and lunch is provided for free!! :D

I don't think McKneff meant her post to be taken seriously hence the line of dots at the end.
