Unfortunately (possibly) an elected government feels they already have a mandate from the public to do whatever they think best.
As for the petition, well, given enough hype (like this one had) you'd easily get 2 million signatures supporting things like "Pedophiles should be hanged" or "No more immigration". That would not automatically make them the right thing to do.Can I help?0 -

Do we actually live in a democracy or is it all smoke and mirrors?
Might be mirrors but definately not smoke....... well not after 1st July anyway!0 -
If they got rid of all the unlicenced/untaxed/uninsured cars from the roads, congestion would drop.
But introducing this would lead to more unlicenced/untaxed/uninsured cars as people try to beat the system.
In any case, I'm all for it as I'm going to make a killing selling a device that will let you drive for free! I can make loads of them out of a single roll of Bacofoil...0 -

LOL, very good, but It wouldnt work. The current GATSO type number plate readers with a whole new network of ANR (automatic number regionation) cameras around the country will track your every move. This will then be comapred to the database of your movement from the data collected from your 'tracker'. If there is a mismatch then someone has had the bacon foil out! No doubt collcect your points and £1000 fine in the post.
Just one way they would enforce this type of system.
Goverment has to do something other than Tax fuel to death... why? Cus within a few years people will be switching to other fuels -ie electricity. If you can charge your car up over night for 40p and it does 100 odd miles (0.4p a mile of which only 5% is Tax, plus no road tax as its a zero emission car) then thats going to leave one MIGHTY big hole in the tax mans wallet.
This is not the car of the future the technology to do this has been around from the early 80's. Oil companys/Car companys and goverments dont want electric cars. Just watch the documentry 'Who killed the electric car?'.
Oh and smartcar have thier new EPV out - strangly NO CAN BUY ONE - they are lease only... oh and only businesses can lease them?? Hmmmm
And dont get sucked in to the hype electric cars are Slower (wrong - faster acceleration than petrol), lower top speed (wrong - think the record is well over 100mph) Expensive to maintain (wrong - batteries now last longer than the cars - and no oil filters, fuel filters less moving part etc, a service = checking the tyres) okay im starting to rant now better go to work.
BTW im not some big save the planet nut, infact I couldnt care less about the enviroment. I CARE ABOUT MY BANK BALANCE!0 -

You don't honestly believe they could get that organised do you, that would take someone with a modicum of brains!!!!!0 -
Problem with electric cars is they need to be charged... how does that happen, then? Oh yes, from power stations...
Someone worked out the emissions produced by a G-Wiz electric car produced by the power stations generating the electricity (averaged out for coal/nuclear/wind etc) and it effectively emit more than a Ford Focus!
As for ANPR - cloned plates time!0 -

I had a feeling along these lines. They need the tax revenue from somewhere, with cars doing more mpg these days, big brother will want to suck out your cash using another excuse. Has anything been said about motorbikes yet? You cannot charge them a congestion fee can you? If phoney Tony gets his way ,I may just have to get rid of the lil` ol Saxo and go back to biking (a nice Triumph Speed Triple is out there with my name on it!)I would love some decent telly on a Saturday night0 -

Well, your 'tracker' says I havent moved for 5 days, and your reg shows up as 20 hits on ANPR system. Dont think you need too many brain cells to write a program to flag this up. I guess your right, it wouldn't have to be as smart as I first made out. In Northern Ireland & part of London your reg is scanned as a matter of course for 'anti' terror reasons - so the technology already is out there.
As for electric cars not being green - your prob right, after all what are they going to do with all those batteries?? I dont care about the planet, it costs me 12.5p a mile in my 2.5TD Omega, so something that costs me 0.4p a mile gets a big thumbs up from me.
Theres over a trillion $$$'s of oil still to sold, so theres no rush on the electric car just yet!
Scanning number plates is the way to go, but I seem to get stopped about once a month by the old bill (working nights) so I doubt I would get away with it.0 -
My reply from TB (now there's a set of initials!) went straight into my Junk email folder :rotfl:. Hadn't appreciated my PC's sense of humour till now ... sorry my mistake, it was deadly serious
