Should I replace the engine?

  • Don't drive it - really don't drive it anywhere, not even to the garage.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

If its leaking as bad as you say i would say its got a cracked head or a blown head gasket does it misfire?

Thank you for all responses so far. @ Pendulum the oil is on the engine at the top. the engine cover is all soaked. Where i park over night it drips onto the ground. the warning on the computer says "oil pressure insufficient". have not changed the oil as the dipstick shows sufficient oil.

That could be no more than a knackered rocker cover gasket. Get a garage to check the car out.

Ah sorry Shane for missing the appointment, had a bit of an issue with some guy called 'Matt', he was from some silly BBC programme. I suspect that the popularity of our offering is growing through people like yourself recommending us and this is the price of fame. :(

I have rescheduled a mechanic close to your vicinity to come and see you tomorrow at around 3pm, I hope this is acceptable? If not then please let Emma know on our 24/7 hotline at 0898 145542. Please tell her to stop the heavy breathing and groaning sounds when you call, the poor girl has bad asthma and it sometimes takes a sharp 'STOP' to pull her out of it. She will however be happy to chat with you for as long as you desire.

The mechanic will come with a 100% 'definate' <sic> guarentee of diagnosis that your engine is broken beyond repair. Please pay him £35 for your certificate. Thank you kindly.

Did I forget to mention that your advice is about as helpful as a vat of chocolate at a WeightWatchers convention?

Was offered a 1.8 petrol Citroen C5 auto 51 plate by an old friend for free as I was looking for a car. The car was ok for a month but it has started making a funny squeeky sound. There's oil leaking in the engine. The body work is in mint condition and engine has 140000 miles on clock. As it was a free 'gift' it has been sugested to me that I should replace the engine. As I am not well clued on cars I would appriciate all your views on whether it is worthwhile to replace the engine or may just move the car on. If so what are the likely labour costs etc. I

That is good, it is only when the oil decides to leak out of the engine that you have problems;)
Seriously, do you know any good mechanics who can give the car the once over, because the leak could be from somewhere quite cheap like the cam cover or a b adly fitted oil filter or sump plug.
If it was me, I would thoroughly clean the whole engine bay with degreaser, making sure that I didn't get any on the upper electric parts/injectors/battery/fuse box, and then try to see where the oil is coming from. I would also keep a close eye on the oil levels to see how much is being lost.

Parva, can you get Emma to dress up as a mechanic and come round and service me - sorry my Mondeo, because I have heard that some mechanics are really dirty:o

How many miles have you driven it with the "oil pressure insufficient" warning on display?

Before spending money on it, I'd look to assess the condition of other areas of the car. It's all OK to say that 140K on a modern car isn't an issue but we're talking about a French car here - they're hardly known for their quality.
