credit card debt with collection agency can i still claim

I'm in the process of looking into my loans and credit cards to see if i have been paying PPI, some of my credit cards and loans have been passed onto debt collection agencies,
I have 2 questions
1. Can I still claim?
2. If I am successful will the money i receive be used to pay off some of the balance?
