House Insurance for Property being Renovated

I'm in the process of buying a property which needs a lot of renovation. We will continue to live in a rented home, so it will not be our main residence & will be unoccupied until we complete the renovation and put it on the market.

Not yet exchanged contracts, but I've been looking online for insurance quotes for the building only (presumably we have to insure it after exchange of contracts) - most of the online quotes have come back saying that I need to phone them, presumably because the property will be empty & will not be our main residence.

The couple of quotes that I did manage to get differ by substantial amounts. Can anyone recommend particular insurance companies, if you have insured a property in a similar situation? Many thanks.

  • Hi Mary,

I saw that you were asking about house insurance while doing a renovation, and I was wondering how you got on as I'm just about to do the same thing! Who did you get your insurance with? Any good advice or horror stories? I've only had one quote so far, and it was eye-watering...

    Thanks,

    Kenny

Similar situation in 2010 - renovation now complete (well almost)!

We used Self-Build Zone Renovation cover, for first years insurance cover whilst major works were being carried out and not living in property

Competitive price, helpful sales team, and comprehensive policy which also provided Health and Safety posters etc to place around your property giving information for tradespeople

Cannot remember exact price without checking and obviously based on value of your property, but worth a call to them

I have searched Google just now for url but page seems to be playing up on my pc
