Water supply issues...

Hello,

Right... I've just bought a house and it has a shared water supply. I am in the process of having a new one installed (had poly-pipe put across my driveway last week and have a new stop-tap in my kitchen. Will be connected to mains shortly).

Our pre-existing shared supply enters the house at two points - in the kitchen (at the front) and in the lavatory (at the side). Now... the bloke from Thames Water came out to have a look and has observed that the pipes to the front and side of our house (an old 1930s council semi) run beneath the neighbour's front and rear extensions and T off of the (lead) supply pipe to his house. The Thames Water bloke also noticed that the neighbour has (illegally and inexplicably) tapped his own metal water supply to run a surface plastic pipe from the side of his property into his own kitchen (as his main household water supply!).

The Thames Water bloke spoke to the neighbour and said "don't worry, I haven't seen that plastic pipe" but has advised the neighbour to sort it out for his own good. Sadly the neighbour now seems to be upset with me; he knows that we need to terminate the old connections to our house (and will need access to the joint stop valve), but has moved his caravan (and wheelclamped it) right on top of the shared stop valve on his driveway.

We are still very friendly and chat for protracted periods but I would like to know what rights of access I have to the shared stop valve? Presumably the water supply can be turned off in the road by Thames Water if necessary for us to get our connections cut but I would rather keep things friendly.

Any advice or comments welcome please!

The Water Co will provide you with your own independent supply with its own stop-valve (and possibly meter) They should not need to get to the shared stop-valve to do this, where the caravan is parked.

Your neighbour has no reason to get shirty with you. A surface water pipe is much more likely to freeze, and its simply his own fault.
