shows how much I know about heating :D

I've had a look, but can't find a box, or any heating controls. Mind you, I can only get to about 2/3rds of the cylinder anyway because it's in an awkward place so it's probably on the side I can't see!

    Thanks for the tips.
  • Hi all
Just joined the forum as we have had a frightening gas bill and "interim reassessment" from EDF to£ 70 per month.

we have a 4 bed detached house - 15 years old timber frame construction with very high insulation in the walls, floor and loft.

When we moved in all was fine - less gas used than in our previous 3 bed semi but either the system is going wrong or I am getting out of touch with prices!

Heating by wall mounted non-condensing boiler (15 years old too) and hot water by a Geldhill mains pressure system - heated by gas too. Rad thermostats throughout

I have just worked out our gas consumption since changing to EDF and we seem to be using 32,000 kwh on gas alone per year which seems a lot given the heating is only on morning and evenings weekdays and a bit more at weekends as we all go out to work.

I think our boiler is a bit tired but if anyone has any idea how much we ought to be using it would be a good start before I look at replacing anything

    All help gratefully received

    Welcome to the forum.

32,000kWh pa is highish but not excessive. Plenty of people(including myself) use more.

A modern condensing boiler might improve that 10-15% or so; but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest modern boilers have a shorter life and give more problems.

I suspect any measures you take will be trimming consumption rather than slashing it.

i've just had my gas bill , i have been paying around 20 -25 per month for years but the bill i've just had is over double what is normal , i've now got to pay 50ish pm , or would have if i were to stay , which i'm not
  • I have also had what I believe to be a high gas bill but am a first time buyer and so am not too sure what I should be expecting to pay.

I live in a 2 bedroom end terrace (just myself and my partner) and have a modern combi boiler. We cook on electric and only use gas for heating the home and heating our water. Our bill was over £200 with Powergen! Surely this is not right?? We cook on electric every night and our electric bill was only £40. These prices are from 1st December to 16th February.

We have checked the reading and this is correct. What should I do???

Just had my first bill from powergen our new provider for, nov 13. to feb 18 £263.00 hubby and I nearly had heart attack. How long do you have to stay with new provider before you switch ? We live in semi two bed bungalow , with good loft and cavity wall insulation, we have thermostats and silver foil stuff behind all rads. We are on the tariff that is managed online. Electric bill from same provider is £116 00 we have 1 tv, computer, washing machine, and electric oven that gets used to cook 4 times weekly. checked readings and they seem to be correct. I am worried, we appear to have made the wrong move with providers.

There is no minimum term where you have to stay with a supplier. On some fixed tariffs you may be charged a cancellation fee, but it doesn't look as if you are on one of those.

In all fairness Powergen's online tariff whilst maybe not always the cheapest is still very competetive in most regions.
