Redundancy, mortgage protection and starting a new business

I've just been made redundant as my employer has gone into liquidation. I have mortgage protection in place and am applying for jobseekers allowance etc.
I have ideas and plans for starting a new small business but can I do this without voiding my inurance and benefits payments? My new business wouldnt be earning money straight away and i have family responsibilities so am reluctant to proceed with this plan if it basically wipes out any money coming in.
Any advice appreciated!
