Why have we got yet again another tedious thread speculating if and when free bus travel will be abolished.
Here is a recent thread with 207 posts covering most of the nonsense talked about this subject.

Nonsense? I assume you have inside knowledge to say otherwise?0 -

Bus passes are a fact, they are here and now.
Speculating what may or may not happen in the future about "what someone heard" is pointless.
Inside information
even the government doesn`t know what it`s doing from one day to the next.0 -

Good, and long may they keep renewing it, you`ve earned it.0 -
Passes will continue -and bus services will continue to deteriorate.0

The only difference we have locally is that bus passes used to be issued (locally) by the district councils. Now they are issued by the County Council- 25 miles away -either by post or in person at City Hall. They are developing an online service.
As mine has a year to run hopefully the online renewal will be up and running by 2013!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

If diesel keeps on going up in price, this might be the moment we look back and say "This was the year that buses regained their role in personal mobility".
If you have not yet tried your bus pass you don't know what you are missing.

If they did away with the passes there would be an awful lot of empty buses driving around during the daytime. That could lead to bus companies going out of business so then there may not be any buses running at peak times to get people to work.
Interesting that you comment about busses being empty during the day. Where I live they are full to capacity. Mums with kids and loads of people of working age who are either on the night shift, or unemployed. Honestly don't see that many pensioners.0 -
Fuel may be going up but bus companies can off set this expense against tax as can all haulage firms.
If certain bus routes are not paying they either reduce the service to the demand or cut them altogether.
Most rural routes are funded by councils and it is the councils that are axing the routes.
Most areas, if not all, don`t allow passes to be used until 9-30am on weekdays.0
