Example of bad customer service - share your experience

Any thought or bad experience you might want to share. Would be quite interesting to read how low can they fall.

Here is mine.

Alliance&Leicester

Last summer i went to supermarket to do some shoping and my card was declined. Good that i had some extra cash on me. I knew that i had plenty in my account, so after i left shop, i phoned my bank straight away. And they said card was blocked because they got some post returned back. When i asked why they didn't call me first, she just could'nt give me a straight answer. Anyway, after all the security questions card was unblocked. But this doesn't end here. I went out with my friends in the evening. And to my surprise, i could'nt get any money from the cashpoint. Again had to call customer services. And now excuse was 'oh she forgot to activate your card again, i will do that for you, but it will take another 20min before you can use your card'. Well the fact that i had few drinks 'helped' me to forget this incident. But now when i think, i should'nt let them to get away with this. Especially when i got £25 charge recently.
Few months later when i was back in my home country, i could'nt use internet banking. Apparently they stop you from using internet banking, because you outside country. But they dont say anything about it on they T&C.

Nationwide

As I finally fed up with A&L, I applied for bank account with Nationwide in the end of December. And still no decision. When i phoned them first time, they could'nt find my application. Which was ridicilous, because i could see from my credit report that they done the search. They asked me to call back week(!!!) later. Rang them second time and they promised to call me back and obviously never did. Made a call 3rd time today. Representitive was quite unfriendly and said that i will have to call tomorrow, because the other department is closed. So i would rate them as absolutely useless.

Well i opened new account with Citibank now, lets see how long will it take for them to ££ck up ;)

    Dell Poor Customer Service

I was thinking about ordering a new office PC and was taken in by Dell’s offer of a £75 Google AdWords voucher, which would have really helped with my start-up company’s fledgling marketing campaign. My only reservation was the delivery time, so I rang up Dell to find out more. Mistake. Their customer service operative persuaded me to stay on the line and complete my order over the phone. This meant he could fast track my order. This took the ordering process out of my hands, as he filled in the form at his end. I was then pressured into rapidly reading the invoice that he e-mailed to me before completing the order. I was still happy, because I thought I was getting a good deal.
One week later, the computer arrives and there is no mention of the Google AdWords voucher. So I ring up to ask about it, and the very same customer service operative points out that the voucher was not included on the invoice. In my haste, I had not spotted this on the invoice, but more importantly, he had not asked me if I wanted it or not.
This voucher is a free extra, so could I get one sent out anyway?
Not a chance. However, sir, if you were to order another Dell computer, you would get a voucher then.
That’s hardly the point – I should have been offered it in the first place.
If customer service operatives want to take the ordering process out of my hands, I wish they’d be more thorough with it. There are dozens of things to remember when ordering a new PC, and not being able to see the order form from you end doesn’t exactly help. My advice would be to stick with online order forms, wherever possible. That way you can always be sure you are getting what you want and aren’t being shortchanged.

  • It does state in the T&C's that you have to be a UK resident. The fact that you can't use internet banking outside the UK may be a bad for the odd few but it does protect the many.

Weird...I live in Germany until April on temporary work assignment and I can log in all the time. I rang up and told them I was going though, so they could authorise my debit card to be used abroad. I assume this is when they authorised the online access too.

I've used on-line banking, including A&L, from overseas (Canada) - no problems whatsoever.
