EDF please help

hi all!

right, i'll jump right in!

Me and my partner moved into our smail one bed flat in november 2010 we didn't receive any bills from them for three months which we thought was normal, when we did get one it was for 536 which we thought was wrong, so we called them, they said that it was mix up and that we need to turn off our electricity for fifeteen minutes and see the meter reading after, we did and they never called back, and when we called them they said there was nothing on there records of the phone call.
after about a week later we recieved another bill, which was 514 we have tryed calling them several times every time we got a another person and they say they cant find anything on there records, we have (over the last 15 months) called them on numurous ocasions sent them letters emails letters by special delivery etc, to complain and try and get someone to fix this problem.

we both work full time and when we are out we turn everything off at the wall, we also only managed to get a washing machine 6 months ago, and this week a fridge freezer (i was an apprentice so money was tight and we really had to juggle, we have only just got ourselves mostly in the clear now, apart from EDF).

we have had quotes from a few company's now just to try and figure out how wrong they have been, and we got a quote of 668 for the whole year. today we have had a letter from them saying that we now owe them 1523 for 15 months.....please tell me that they are wrong??!!??

we both work in a law firm that deals with disputes etc and the solicitor has said just to keep trying (he's not the best lol) but we need help, we dont know how to deal with them, or how to get them off our backs, we are happy to pay them the right amount (we haven't paid them anything as we dont think we should until we get a correct bill) and just want them gone.

if anyone has any idea's please suggest them, we are now at a loss!

Thank you in advance

Do the bills actually match the consumption as shown on your meters? No one can tell you what the bill should be without knowing what you have used.
I'm completely unclear as to whether you registered for an account with EDF as soon as you entered the property and submitted opening readings? Were they the existing suppliers?

i dont want to sound harsh but the first thing to do is alwasy read the gas and leccy meter and ring whoever your supplier is and confirm that wit them.

have you monitered your usage each day?

First off, the person saying to switch everything off seemed to think someone or something other than you or your appliances was using elec. That's a bit too soon on the back of a high bill on a new tenant.

The best thing o do is take your readings at the same time each day for seven days and if possible spraddle the weekend so you can capture potentially heavier usage when. You are in longer. Then deduct the reads in reverse order from other to give you your usage per day. Work out the average and multiply it into a year. This is a basic calc so would not be accurate enough as there is no seasonal adjusting but at least you can decide if that bill looks nothing lime what you are using now.

Now, if that first bill still appears far too high, its very likely that your opening reading is incorrect because the previous owner was underbilled...so get them to re estimate it so it becomes higher and reduces your first bill. However, if your daily usage looks the same as that bill, you may have other issues with high consumption but you haven't given enough data to go any further.
