USB External Hard Drive Protection

Help please on this one

A friend of mine has asked me how do you password protect a usb external hard drive or stop it being accessed by somebody else in the event that it may be lost or stolen.

Afraid that I couldn't give him any great help on the subject apart from maybe encrypting all data stored on it, not sure how you do that, but I did suggest to him that I would post the question on the site to see what the general view was on the subject.

I understand you could password protect individual files or folders, but he's looking for something that will just cover everything on the drive
