Radio signal problems - diagnosing?

2008 ford with a 6000 aux/cd radio has been having some signal issues (seems to be frequencies below 100MHz). It started very randomly during the week and was at first suddenly unable to find half the stations programmed, and struggled with the others.
I removed and then tightened the aerial mast and re-programmed the stations, which definitely improved things as it now finds the stations but sometimes cuts out randomly for a split second - not all the stations do this.
There are reports online of faults with Fords 6000 units, where signal is lost after 10 to 30 minutes of use - don't think this is happening to me yet.
Should I replace the aerial mast or base?
