Website renewal

I need some advice please.
I set up a free website with GBBO which has now changed to Yola and have just received this message from them

Dear Lynn
This is a reminder that the following domain in your account is scheduled to expire soon and will be deleted from your account if you do not manually renew it:
Domain Name: thexxxxxxxx.co.uk
Expiry Date: Saturday 17 March 2012
Please be aware that if your domain name is deleted, any email, website, or other services that were associated with it may be affected. Please contact us as soon as possible to ensure there are no interruptions.
Best wishes

They want to charge £17.00 a year to renew and I am sure that I can get this much cheaper elsewhere...but have no idea how to do it !!
Can anyone please give me an idiots guide (step by step) way to this ?

Well known scam, often as a letter through the post looking like a bill. Almost certainly didn't come from them. .co.uk domains should not be more than a tenner for two years.

I don't believe it is a scam..as the website was only free for the first year.
They had all of my details, as well.
Has anyone else got some good advice for me, please ?

Yola allow you to transfer the domain away from them free of charge after 60 days.

I have no idea who you are going to transfer to, but HERE is a link to the process at LCN.com who currently charge £3 per year for .uk domains. LCN terms state that if you are within one month of expiry, they will process it as a renewal, so you will have to pay the next two years on transfer.
I would expect that other registrars will have similar terms.

123-Reg are a big domain registrar and allow free transfers of .uk domains and charge £2.99 a year for them.

Of cause what GBBO is offering for £17.99 is not just the domain but the hosting and site builder where as both LCN and 123-Reg are only offering the domain for £3 and you will need to buy the hosting separately to that.

All in all the GBBO price isnt bad subject to the quality of service you are getting. The company I recommend for hosting starts at £30 a year exc domain but it does allow you to host two totally distinct sites on the account.

    InsideInsurance,

Do you mind if I ask what all you get for £30? I pay similar for 200Mb space, 2Gb/month data, 5 domains (with unlimited subdomains), Cpanel with Fantastico, webmail (limited to 500 accounts or so), and 2 SQL databases. There are also a few other bits and bobs.

Worth seeing what other people are getting for the money!

    £30 =
    2 domains
    25 domain aliases
    5 sub domains

    2gb capacity
    15gb data
    4 MySQL dbs

    15 IMAP/POP3 accounts with webmail
    Unlimited aliases
    Unlimited forwarders
    Unlimited auto responders

It isnt the package I have with them as I have a resellers account and host on Windows rather than Linux. I know they arent the cheapest company but to date (7 years or so) they've had very good service.

They are squarely aimed at "businesses" rather than hobbiests or people wanting to just play etc hence intentionally pricing to sell on service rather than lowest cost
