Hi my wife as just bought a new laptop & was wondering is it better if the battery completely discharges for longevity? every now & then or does it not matter?

Also the laptop is connected within a home network & is set as such, when the situation changes should you always change to 'public network' etc

Appreciate any help

With a Lithium Ion battery, completely discharging it will kill it.

Heat is what kills them more than anything. If you use it mostly on mains, discharge the battery to 50% then remove and store in a cool place (not a fridge).

The public network setting tightens up security and blocks everything except web browsing/MSN/Email etc.

shouldnt be a problem, I usually recommend a little program called battery info as it tells you everything you need to know about the battery, its freeware and small
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html

    quote

BatteryInfoView is a small utility for laptops and netbook computers that displays the current status and information about your battery. The displayed battery information includes the battery name, manufacture name, serial number, manufacture date, power state (charging/discharging), current battery capacity, full charged capacity, voltage, charge/discharge rate, and more...
BatteryInfoView also provides a log window, which adds a new log line containing the battery status every 30 seconds or any other time interval that you choose.

there are other program which are also freeware to do the same thing, but i like this one, others include batterybar and batterycare
