Leaky washing machine hose connector?

Options
Hello

The cold water inlet hose on my washing machine just won't stop dripping when under mains pressure. Are there any hot tips for fixing this? :)

I've tried 3 different hoses now, and the washers look fine on all of them. I don't connect them too tight, and I can't see any holes or flaws in the threaded connector. The drips come right from the connector, as if the washer isn't fully sealing.

Sometimes it starts dripping straight away, sometimes after a couple of days. So annoying!

Thanks!

Jason

You might not be tightening enough to start with. Are the hoses you are using new? It has to be your connection, if it is only happening now.Make sure the surface of the cold valve is clean(where the washer/hose connects). Cannot see you having 3 faulty hoses. You could try a bit of PTF on the thread but 99% of the time it will be the washer.

I don't connect them too tight

I would say that is your problem, the water is mains pressure they need to be really tight to stop leaks.

    Hi.

Is the leak at the tap end or machine end?

What kind of tap is it?

I have had some where the nut doesn't tighten properly because it hits the handle.

Try adding another washer, tighten firmly as kick from the machine shutting the water off creates quite a shock.

PTFE on the threads,in this instance, will serve no purpose at all as it's the washer that seals. All you will do is make it harder to tighten up.

Are you tightening them by hand or using a wrench?

Sometimes you need to re-tighten after a few days as the washers settle down. Use a wrench but don't get heavy handed.

just a thought is the leak coming from the end where the washer has a built-in filter ?

in my experience they leak, so i take them out throw them away & fit a normal rubber washer without the filter.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Thanks for all the replies.

The leak is at the machine end, and I've been tightening by hand (didn't want risk damaging the washer or plastic thread). Surface of the cold valve seems clean and smooth.

I headed out yesterday and bought some more washers, and they are a bit thicker and more pliable than the ones supplied with the hoses. So replaced the washer with one of these and so far so good.

Will pull the machine out again tomorrow and check for leaks, and give it another tighten as suggested.

    Cheers,
    Jason

I've only fitted a few appliance hoses but I can never get them to seal when they're only hand tight, it's always needed a quarter or half turn with a wrench to get them to seal.
