Short Computer Courses

Does anybody know of any short computer courses for spreadsheets that are free or very inexpensive. I do not work but do not claim any benefits due to my husband working. We are already paying full fees for my 3 1/2 year counselling courses (nearly finished) so can't afford to pay for more courses but I would like some help with spreadsheets so was wondering if there is anything free or cheap?? I'm ok on the computer with writing my assignments and I use the internet but that is it really and I would like some knowledge of spreadsheets to keep a record of clients attendance and averages over the year this type of thing. Also spreadsheets would help me with my personal finances too.
Any ideas?

    Which country are you a permanent resident of? (i.e. Scotland / England / Wales / other)

    There are different funding oportunities available. Let us know so we can give you the correct details :)

    Have you checked out if there are any community projects in your area?

    I have heard of free coaching at community centres, libraries etc. New Deal for Communities has put a lot of money into some areas in the country.

    The library would be a good place to start asking, and Googling your area + computer might find something useful. Oh yes, how about calling the local paper? They may be able to search back for articles about free coaching.

    Best of luck
  • Usually the college or university you're studying with offers free computer courses.

    Thanks for that, it's the site I wanted to tell Mae about, but as I'm from Scotland, I'm not eligible and as such don't have it bookmarked... Was struggling to find it. :rolleyes:
    These vision2learn courses are fundable by the Learning and Skills Council. This means that the courses are normally free of charge to anyone who:
    * Is over the age of 16
    * Currently lives in England
    * Has been ordinarily resident in the EU/UK for 3 years or more, as long as this residency has been for purposes other than full-time study.
  • I loved it, you have to keep on top of it, as its distance learning you have to motivate yourself.

    Next steps in IT includes units on spreadsheets/word/email/using a computer so it should be easier to do if you have experience of the other things. I just wanted to get a certificate to show I did have the skills, I still learned some new tips :T so well worth it!

    Thanks everyone thats really helpful. Ive looked at the Vision2Learn site and it looks great I think I might go for the Next steps in IT. I was just wondering though are the certificates you get actually recognised are they the same if you paid for the course at college? Sorry if thats a stupid question.

    My uni offers courses for as little as £5. Including the European Computer Driving Licence.. which is Spreadsheets, word processing, presentations and everything! Check with the Computer Services department of your uni or look at the website. :)
