D drive not working

Does anybody know how I can try and get my D drive working before I call in the experts. I don't know much about computers so if anybody has any help they can give me it will have to be in baby language, I'm usually ok with instructions its just the jargon talk I'm not great with.
I was just going to call the experts in but my mums D drive was broke too and he said hers wasn't broken it just was working due to some viruses she had on her comp?? I don't think mine has any viruses as everything else working well but as I said I don't know much.
Any ideas greatly appreciated

Is it a hard drive? What do you mean by "not working", is it not recognized, does it come up with errors, will it simply not open?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Thanks for your reply
Its the DVD-RW Drive (D:) ,when I put a disc in just nothing happens it doesn't load. So when I go into 'my computer' I click on this drive and there is nothing there?? Hope that makes sense..0 -
Is it the same if you put either a DVD Rom or DVD R/RW in, or even a cd for that matter?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

In My Computer, when you right-click on the DVD-RW drive is AutoPlay option listed? What happens if you right-click on it and click Open?0

Chippy Minton Thanks for your reply.. I did this but there is no auto play option listed although when I right clicked a list came up and when I looked in properties auto play was an option there but there wasn't an option to open? It just said select a content type? Music files was high lighted? Means nothing to me?0

My last sentence was a bit ambiguous. Right-click on the DVD-RW drive and click Open. Are any files listed as a result?0

Chippy Minton I did what you said and no there is nothing listed its just blank when I click open?0

Does the same problem occur with all DVDs and CDs? Does it happen with DVDs/CDs you've burnt yourself and 3rd party discs?
Right-click My Computer - Manage - Device Manager. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. Are there any red or yellow symbols showing there?0 -
Thanks again... Seems to happen with everything we put in the draw? Ive done what you said and there are no yellow or red symbols showing it just says Philips DVD+-RW DVD8631 when I expand DVD/CD ROM drives??0
